Clear Spring vs Clear Winter: how to tell bright coloring apart
Updated October 19, 2026. 5 min read.
Clear Spring and Clear Winter are often called Bright Spring and Bright Winter. Both types are defined by clarity. Your coloring has noticeable contrast, saturated colors make your face look sharp and awake, and soft or dusty shades tend to look flat or muddy on you.
The difference is temperature. Clear Spring leans warm. Clear Winter leans cool. Because the two types sit next to each other in the 12-season system, many people with bright coloring test well in colors from both, and it can take a few side-by-side comparisons to see which side you fall on.
What they share
- Clear contrast between your hair, skin and eyes.
- Eyes that look bright or sparkling rather than soft.
- Saturated, clean colors give your face definition.
- Muted colors such as khaki, dusty mauve and gray-brown make you look tired.
- High-shine finishes on lips often suit you, because shine adds to the clear look.
If you are not yet sure that clarity is your main trait, start with the personal color quiz. It sorts you by your strongest trait first, then by temperature.
How to tell them apart
Run these comparisons in daylight, without makeup, with your hair pulled back. Look at your skin, not at the color itself. The right color makes your skin look even and your eyes look clear. The wrong one makes shadows, redness or a yellow or gray cast stand out.
Coral-red or fuchsia. This is the most useful test. Hold a bright coral-red next to a vivid fuchsia. If the coral-red makes your skin look warm and lively while the fuchsia looks loud or separate from your face, lean Clear Spring. If the fuchsia looks natural and the coral-red makes your skin look yellow or ruddy, lean Clear Winter.
Warm white or pure white. Clear Spring usually looks better in a slightly warm, creamy white. Clear Winter can carry pure, optic white without looking washed out.
Gold or silver. Bright, polished gold points to Clear Spring. Bright silver and platinum point to Clear Winter. Jewelry is a weaker test than fabric because the area is small, so use it as a tiebreaker.
Black. Clear Winter usually wears black near the face easily. Clear Spring often looks better in navy or a deep warm brown, although many Clear Springs can wear some black because of their contrast.
The drape test lets you compare warm and cool colors on your own face, which works better than reading descriptions.
What changes in your makeup
| Clear Spring | Clear Winter | |
|---|---|---|
| Lips | Clear coral-red, bright warm pink, poppy red | Fuchsia, clear red, bright berry, vivid pink |
| Blush | Bright coral or clear warm pink | Clear cool pink |
| Eyes | Clear warm brown, gold shimmer, sharp brown or black liner | Clear cool color, silver shimmer, black liner |
| Base | Neutral-warm shades, satin or glow finish | Neutral or neutral-cool shades, glow finish |
The finish matters as much as the shade for both types. A muted matte in the right hue can still look dull on bright coloring, while a glossy or glass finish keeps the color clean.
Korean shades labeled for each
rom&nd labels some of its shades by 12-season type. These are the brand’s labels, not ours.

Clear Winter: Juicy Lasting Tint 12 Cherry Bomb (labeled True Winter and Clear Winter), Better Than Cheek W01 Odi Milk (labeled Light Summer, True Summer and Clear Winter).
No rom&nd shade in our list is labeled for both Clear Spring and Clear Winter. If you sit on the border, compare one shade from each list on your lips in daylight. The full list is in rom&nd shades by color type.
Product lines to start with
These are our suggestions, not brand labels. We point both clear types to lines with a glossy or clear finish first, then you choose warm or cool shades within the line.
- rom&nd Glasting Water Tint has a very glossy, watery finish. Check whether each shade is described as warm or cool on the retailer page.
- CLIO Volumate Blur Tint/Gloss is a plumping gloss with clear color. Plumping glosses can tingle, so read the description if your lips are sensitive.
- peripera Pure Blushed Sunshine Cheek is a clear, bright powder blush. Pick coral shades for Clear Spring and pink shades for Clear Winter.
If you still cannot decide
Some people really do sit on the line, and that is fine. Stay with clear, saturated colors, which is the trait you share, and choose shades that look close to neutral: a true red rather than an orange-red or a blue-red, and a clear medium pink rather than coral or fuchsia.
