Soft Summer vs Soft Autumn: how to tell which one you are
Updated October 19, 2026. 3 min read.
Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are the two types people mix up most. That makes sense: both are defined by the same trait, softness. Your coloring is muted and blended, with little contrast, and bright saturated colors stand apart from your face.
The only real difference is temperature. Soft Summer leans cool. Soft Autumn leans warm. Because both sit close to neutral, the difference can be hard to see.
What they share
- Low contrast between hair, skin and eyes.
- Hair that is often ash brown, mousy or dark blonde.
- Eyes that look soft and mixed, like gray-green, hazel or soft brown.
- Bright colors, neon and stark black-and-white look harsh.
- Dusty, slightly grayed colors look natural.
If that list describes you, you are probably one of the two. Now the question is which side.
Four ways to tell them apart
1. Rose or peach. Hold a dusty rose and a muted peach (or a soft coral) under your chin in daylight. If the rose makes your skin look even and calm while the peach makes it look yellow or sallow, lean Soft Summer. If the peach makes you look healthy while the rose makes you look gray or pale, lean Soft Autumn.
2. Silver or gold. Soft types often look fine in both, but one usually wins slightly. Brushed silver and pewter point to Soft Summer. Soft gold and bronze point to Soft Autumn.
3. Your best nude lipstick. Soft Summers usually reach for a rosy or mauve nude. Soft Autumns usually reach for a beige, caramel or peachy nude. If you already have a favorite, look at its undertone.
4. Grey or khaki. Soft Summer looks good in blue-gray and slate. Soft Autumn looks good in khaki, olive and camel.
Do the checks in daylight by a window, with no makeup, and look at your skin rather than the color. You can do the rose-versus-peach check on your own face with our drape test.
What changes in your makeup
| Soft Summer | Soft Autumn | |
|---|---|---|
| Lips | Dusty rose, mauve, muted berry | Warm nude, muted coral, soft brick |
| Blush | Muted rose, mauve | Muted peach, warm rose |
| Eyes | Taupe, smoky plum, soft gray-brown | Khaki, soft bronze, warm taupe |
| Finish | Blurred, velvet, satin | Blurred, velvet, satin |
The finish is the same for both. Soft types look best in blurred and velvet finishes that do not add shine or contrast.

If you still cannot decide
Choose shades that sit in the middle: rosy-beige nudes, muted rose-browns and soft mauves that are neither pink nor orange. Velvet and blurred tints such as rom&nd Blur Fudge Tint and peripera Ink Airy Velvet are a good place to start, because the soft finish matters more than the exact temperature for both types.
