Personal colour analysis works best from a well-lit, front-facing photo — but if you're curious about your undertone before you upload, two simple self-checks can give you a useful starting point. Neither is definitive on its own, but together they often point in a consistent direction.
The Vein Test
Look at the underside of your forearm in natural daylight — not fluorescent light, which casts a greenish tint on nearly everyone. Observe the colour of the veins, not the skin around them.
- Blue or purple veins — many people with cool undertones notice this. Cool undertones are associated with pink, rosy, or bluish hues in the skin.
- Green or olive-tinted veins — many people with warm undertones observe this. Warm undertones tend toward golden, peachy, or yellow hues.
- A mix of both, or veins that seem teal — this is common for neutral undertones, which sit between warm and cool.
The Jewellery Test
Hold a piece of silver jewellery and a piece of gold jewellery against your bare wrist (no nail polish, no foundation). Which metal seems to blend into your skin more naturally, or make it look fresher?
- Silver tends to complement cool undertones — the bluish tones in silver harmonise with the cool hues in the skin.
- Gold tends to complement warm undertones — the warmth in gold echoes the golden or peachy notes in the skin.
- Both look equally flattering — a sign of neutral undertones.
